Quality Family Law Representation

"Because It Matters"

Co-parenting after a divorce

Every year, many parents in Kentucky file for divorce. These separations often have major effects on families. However, parents who pay special attention to their children’s needs can help their kids bounce back after the stress of separation.

It is important for divorced or separated parents to maintain a consistent routine for their kids. Divorce comes with many unexpected changes. That’s why it’s a good idea for parents to discuss their expectations about chores and other activities at home and school. One should be supportive of the other parent’s decisions regarding discipline.

Parents should make sure that they assure their children that the divorce was not their fault. Children do not need to know about all the reasons why their parents decided to split up. Instead, it is best to focus on support and reassurance.

Parents should also go out of their way to maintain a close relationship with their children even if circumstances force them to move. Scheduling time to talk to children or even watch the same show at the same time can help kids adjust to life after a divorce.

An attorney may be able to help a parent who has legal questions about child custody. Terms of negotiated parenting plans could be incorporated into divorce decrees in some cases. For example, if parents can agree on a schedule regarding custody and visitation, this can often be incorporated into a final settlement agreement or decree.

Joint custody works much better when parents can agree on major issues like visitation schedules and extracurricular activities. Many judges are reluctant to award joint custody to parents who are likely to come back to court later over a custody dispute. An attorney may be able to help a client who is facing divorce file paperwork and draft a parenting agreement.
