Quality Family Law Representation “Because It Matters”

Co-parenting successfully after a divorce

Kentucky parents who have to co-parent with their ex-partner may find that navigating the relationship can be very difficult, even for co-parents who have a friendly relationship with their ex. Co-parents have to practice emotional maturity in order to deal with different styles of parenting that may directly conflict with their own or with the jealousy they may feel if the other parent enters a new romantic relationship with someone else. For parents who are wondering whether they can co-parent with their ex successfully, there are some steps they can take to improve their chances.

Co-parenting may be easier to handle if both parents understanding the value of their relationship and how much of a role it has in their children's lives. The focus of the parents should be on safeguarding the emotional well-being of their children and making a conscious and sincere effort to treat each other well.

Co-parents can also bolster their relationship by having a clear understanding of how belittling or showing antagonism to the other parent in the view of the children can be harmful. It is important that co-parents appreciate that their children have an emotional bond to both parents.

Having a relationship with both parents is critical for the well-being of the children, unless there are neglect or abuse issues that are present. When parents separate, it can be easy to be preoccupied with the negative qualities of the other parent, especially if the separation or divorce is contentious.

A family law attorney may assist clients with obtaining their desired divorce settlement terms regarding divorce legal issues. Litigation might be pursued to resolve disputes regarding child custody, child support, spousal support, parenting time and other issues that may heighten emotions. Depending on the nature of the divorce, negotiation may also settle disputes.
